Overcoming Educational Challenges in Sri Lanka

Providing an adequate, comprehensive and relevant education from elementary to secondary to university or vocational training remains a challenge for every country in the world, both developed and developing. In the developing country setting, in a country like Sri Lanka, the challenges remain monumental as individuals and families strive to provide their children with the best possible educational foundation so these young people can thrive. Securing a high-quality education, most often, is the only way to improve their standard of living for many vulnerable families in Sri Lanka. Satva Fund has made a concerted effort to assist in this effort through diligently reaching out to individuals and organizations to facilitate this important objective.

Monthly Stipends to Disadvantaged Students in Collaboration With Araliya Trust

In April 2023, Satva Fund Sri Lanka began collaborating with Araliya Trust in providing monthly stipends to 10 disadvantaged students in different parts of Sri Lanka.  For over two decades, Araliya Trust had been supporting families whose school-age children were in danger of discontinuing their education due to the related financial burden.  Araliya Trust carefully tracks the progress of these students through multiple community-based monitors.

Currently, Satva Fund Sri Lanka supports a total of 24 students through Araliya Trust, ranging in age from 10 to 22 years, allowing them further their education with the assistance of the Satva stipends.  Included in the latest cohort of students supported by Satva Fund Sri Lanka is a 17-year old girl from Minhettigama, a very remote village in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, who attends secondary school in Medawachchiya while preparing for her for A’ Level exams.  Another student in this cohort of students includes a 16-year old girl from Gandara, in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.  This young student, who plans to take her ‘O’ level exams in January 2025, is the sole caregiver for her cancer-stricken and insulin-dependent diabetic mother.

In addition, in January 2024, Satva Fund decided to support Araliya Trust’s Food & Shelter Fund, a fund which provides one-off support to families of students who confront emergencies due to a parent losing work or falling ill.  In instances where these families need money to buy essentials such as food and medicine and have little income to pay for it, the Food & Shelter Fund provides them with one-time financial support.

The Education Stipend Initiative Expands

In July 2023, Satva Fund Sri Lanka launched another education stipend initiative to assist eight disadvantaged students to continue their education.

Four students are in secondary school (Grades 7, 10, and 11, respectively) and attend schools in Colombo and Haputale. Satva Fund monthly stipends help these students meet expenses related to transportation to school, school and tuition fees, school supplies, school uniforms, and shoes.

The other four students hail from Deniyaya, Gampaha, Bandarawala, and Ambalantota; two are enrolled in Diploma Courses in Multimedia/Graphic Design and Software Engineering, and two are enrolled at the University of Colombo and the University of Moratuwa in degree programs in Information Technology. Satva Fund stipends help them meet housing, transportation, educational supplies, living, and other essential expenses.

We track the progress of these students through periodic reports from a reliable source.

Additional Educational Assistance to Bataatha South Sindusara Junior School in Gurupokuna

Satva also provided additional support to enhance the educational objectives of this rural school

This rural school has a small library that is used by the students and teachers.  When a donor gifted a selection of books and magazines (including several issues of National Geographic) to Satva in December 2023, a Satva Board Member arranged for the books and magazines (all in English) to be transported to Gurupokuna and placed in the library.

After a Satva Board member was contacted, Satva donated a projector to be used in supplementing lectures with meaningful audio visual aids at this school.  Satva facilitated the purchase, delivery and installation of a projector by John Keells Office Automation (JKOA) along with an extended warranty and service plan.
