SATVA FUND SRI LANKA
When families experience stress, children are the most likely to absorb the trauma associated with the intense stress in families. This extreme stress can result in child abuse, i.e., an act by a parent or caregiver that results in or risks serious harm to a child or child neglect, i.e, when a parent or caregiver fails to consistently provide the basic needs of a child. Child abuse and neglect causes trauma, which can impair brain development in the affected children and is linked to physical, emotional, and behavioral issues later in life. While child abuse and neglect occurs in every country, in developing countries like Sri Lanka, countries with limited resources to provide the proper institutional safeguards to protect children, private organizations intervening to deliver essential services remains critical.
In October 2024, Satva Fund Sri Lanka received a check for $10,000 from the Sri Lanka Association of New York (SLANY). SLANY, founded in 1970, the oldest Sri Lankan association in the United States, is a community organization that serves the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. SLANY periodically disburses funds to assist disadvantaged individuals and organizations in Sri Lanka and in this latest round of disbursements, the SLANY Board of Directors identified Satva Fund Sri Lanka as one of the organizations it would support.
SLANY officials cited Satva Fund Sri Lanka’s 501(c)-3 status as a charitable organization in the United States and the fine work Satva Fund Sri Lanka was carrying out providing critical services to women and children who have experienced abuse or neglect as the impetus for this award to Satva Fund Sri Lanka. Satva Fund Sri Lanka will deploy this SLANY contribution to assist the work being carried out by the Child Protection Force (CPF), an organization focused on assisting children who have experienced abuse and neglect and require support navigating the legal system in Sri Lanka. CPF is one of the organizations Satva Fund Sri Lanka currently supports with monthly transfers.
Satva Fund Sri Lanka is deeply grateful for this vote of confidence by SLANY and truly appreciates the efforts of the SLANY Board of Directors in providing this contribution.
In May 2024, Satva Fund began monthly financial contributions to support the work of Child Protection Force (CPF), an organization located in Battaramulla, advocating for and providing critical services to women and children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Launched in 2017, CPF strives to make the legal system a safer place for victims of abuse by helping them maneuver what often is a very unsympathetic system. CPF specifically assists children mired in the legal system in specific ways: representing them legally; providing mental health aid for victims of abuse; running reintegration initiatives; supporting continued education; and, facilitating safe housing. In addition, CPF is committed to raising awareness on the challenges faced by these women and children as well as collaborating with law enforcement to further their understanding of how to tackle these issues. CPF’s Safe House Meththa is their latest project which provides displaced victims of abuse with housing, food and sanitation.
